The Plaza at Santa Monica

Di Moda PR is handling a very special community focused event: The Plaza @ Santa Monica. The Plaza at Santa Monica will be a new development being realized, designed and built in partnership with the City of Santa Monica. Its an innovative project that will have something for everyone, truly (and free!). We are hosting a buffet-style by invite only dinner at Tiato in Santa Monica with a small group of community members to share more information about this project and get community members, neighbors, business owners, people who work here, excited and knowledgeable. Di Moda does not normally handle projects in dev mode like this but when they approached us and I was able to see what Santa Monica will be gaining, we were all in. I am so impressed by the partnership with the city and the financial benefits it will bring to our immediate community and outward. I think it can be a standing example of how future projects should be realized, approved and created in urban environments.

Here are all the guaranteed community benefits:
- $24 Million dedicated to affordable housing for a project of the city’s choice
- Green Building Council LEED Platinum Certification
- Approximately one acre of outdoor open space programmed for the public with almost $1 Million a year dedicated toward funding a robust, diverse and inclusive calendar of programming for the community.
- An approximately 11,000 sf Urban Garden that will become a center for education with programming regarding farming and gardening and contain a large communal outdoor dining space for community and special events.
- A much needed off-leash Dog Park in downtown, which will be managed in collaboration with city regulations
- A large-scale Mobility Hub with extended storage capacity (over 450 bikes and scooters) acknowledging a diverse set of alternative transportation needs
- Outdoor Amphitheater Seating with a capacity of approximately 200 people for performing space for lectures, theater, music or dance. It will function as passive seating during none performance hours.
- The Main Plaza space will also be the primary location for major seasonal events including the annual ice rink.
- The Public Observation Deck will have a dedicated elevator for the public to the top floor of the building where unobstructed sunsets can be enjoyed.
- A Cultural Partner who will occupy approximately 12,000 sf on the ground floor at the heart of the project and who will participate as appropriate in the programming calendar.
- Creating Union Jobs with an emphasis on local hiring, both construction and permanent.
- Public Restrooms, enough said
- Rem Koolhaus founded firm, OMA has designed a project that focuses as much on the importance of outdoor space as it does the design of the building, and the result is an elegant series of cascading bars that proves well-designed density can be well received.
- This project will generate $4 Billion to the City of Santa Monica over the life of the lease, which can easily be earmarked to address things like affordable housing; this is in addition to any profit participation ground rent due to the City of Santa Monica.
